Tips on how to organise a really memorable children's birthday party

Birthday parties are a great way to create long-lasting memories for your children and make them feel like royalty for the day. But with so many parties these days, how do you organise a birthday party that will be unique to your children? We would like to give you some ideas about possible themes, invitations, decorations, entertainment, and, most importantly, what to wear!

Theme ideas for your child’s birthday party

Whether you decide to host the party in your house or hire a space, having a theme can make planning much easier. Some of the most common party themes are dinosaurs, unicorns, pirates, Lego, or are inspired by popular children’s films like “Frozen” and “Beauty and the Beast”. Some more unusual themes are a book-themed party; a camping party or, for girls, a glamping party (girls will love having manicures as they “camp”); a bake-off party; or a science party. The most important thing is that your child is happy with the idea.

Make creative invitations

To make the party really personal, perhaps you could recruit older children to help you make homemade invitations. Take inspiration from the theme of the party. For instance, if your child is a fan of reading and you plan to have a book-themed party, then consider making book-style invitations. For a bake-off style party, you could make the invitations in the shape of a cupcake. If your child is good at drawing, then he or she might like to draw something on the invitations. For a Lego party, you could attach a Lego figure to the invitation.

The key is in the décor

Decorating the party space is really important and will transform a regular room into a festive area. It is a good idea to have a main table set up with a tablecloth (themed or regular), the birthday cake and other treats. This will be the focal point of the room. Hang “Happy Birthday” bunting on the wall directly behind the table and colourful bunting on the front of the table. You can also include items related to the theme of the party. Here are a couple of examples:

• Camping or glamping party -  place some table top trees on the table. Depending on your budget, you can put some tents on the floor or drape a sheet over some chairs. 
• Book-themed party – place some books on the table and scattered around the room so that children can feel free to pick them up. Copy quotes from a selection of the birthday child’s favourite books and stick them on the walls.

Organise fun activities for the birthday child and guests

To make the party extra memorable arrange some interesting activities for the birthday gang to partake in. Some suggestions are:

• Science party – wear a white coat and have kids make an erupting volcano or do other simple science experiments. Alternatively, you can hire professional science party specialists to entertain the children (you will be amazed at the range of party entertainers there are).
• Bake-off party – have the children bake and decorate cupcakes. If your budget allows, there are also people who specialise in baking parties. The advantage is that they clear up all the mess afterwards!
• Have someone dressed up as your child’s favourite film or cartoon character attend the party. Children will be delighted to see their favourite star.
